Glasshouse on Queen’s Wharf instead of tent.

April 20, 2010 in SPORTS

A temporary facility will be built on Auckland’s Queens wharf to host ‘party central’ for the Rugby World Cup, Murray McCully confirmed today.

The Rugby World Cup Minister announced the plans at a media conference in downtown Auckland this morning. Mr McCully said the structure was “most assuredly not a tent” . Instead it will be a glass house, made from steel and glass. The Government would pay $9 million for the “cost-effective, eco friendly building” and Auckland regional ratepayers would pay $10 million for the upgrade of the wharf, Mr McCully said.

The $19million dollar glasshouse will be the largest in the world, according to Yates Gardens, and will be a real benefit to New Zealand. Once the Rugby World Cup is over it is expected the glasshouse will be put on Trade Me with early suggestions the Coromandel District Council and the Manukau District Council both want the item to help with their local cannabis crops.

Gardener McCully said the Queens Wharf development would feature a fanzone with an international media lounge providing backdrops of the harbour and downtown Auckland. The structure would take up between 5.5 and 6 acres on the site – about 20 per cent of the wharf. “The Queens Wharf will become the people’s glasshouse,” Mr McCully said.

  1. Looks like another attempt from those in charge to please everyone, but satisfy nobody. Tent or a building? – A glass tent, sounds ridiculous, but we should have seen that coming. I’m waiting for them to announce that mining will now begin, but we won’t extract anything of value……or that the Japanese can continue whaling, but they gotta release the whales after the fight.

$9 million of Govt money spent on a temporary glass pub? Thats crazy, NZ could have done something productive with the money.
In the past we got ourselves a pointless referendum for $9 million, I rather another one of those, beats a glass tent.

“Should a glasshouse as part of good alcohol abuse, be a criminal offence on the Auckland waterfront?”

  2. You can add to that first list signing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous people without any debate or consultation. The tail wags the dog in this country. Especially when in this case the tail has about 2.3% of the vote but 5 seats in parliament.

At least the referendum put forward a debate and discussion around an important topic. Perhaps we should have a referendum a year, just to get people thinking. Topics could include – the treaty, crime, tax. In fact to save money your could have 3 or 4 serious questions each year plus some others – is watching Shortland street a criminal offence? Are the All Blac coaches rubbish? All non binding.

Like your question but perhaps like this
“Should a glasshouse, as part of Tax Payers money, be a criminal offence on the Auckland waterfront?”
