Australia rugby coach Robbie Deans and New Zealand co-coach Steve Hansen were both affected by the weekend’s magnitude 7.1 earthquake which hit New Zea land’s Canterbury province.

The historic Home Bush mansion, Canterbury home of Deans’ family for more than six generations, was effectively shaken apart by the quake. Like the Wallaby front row the entire house folded like a pack of cards. Robbie Deans was rather reserved on the issues when asked by an Ozy Mandias reporter earlier today. ” We just have to take it one day at a time. At this stage I won’t be making any major changes. We just need to make sure we have the support structures in places and try and build a foundation from there.” Rugby experts are still trying to determine if he is talking about his house or the Wallaby front row.

Just down the road  the Hansen’s family home at Tai Tapu in rural Canterbury was also extensively damaged by Saturday’s tremor and Steve Hansen was equally as vague when he gave a statement from his Aussie base. Once again we have our team of rugby experts are trying to determine if he is talking about the dodgy All Black lineout or the Christchurch Earthquake. “Collectivelly, we are all working individually to move forward from this position. Obviously last week was a disaster of gigantic proportions but we are confident that is now over. We have made a couple of structural changes, particularly around the base of our tall timber and as a collective unit we are sure these will hold us up if we encounter anything like we had last week.”

As a show of friendship All Black coach Graham Henry has extended an invitation for Steve Hansen and Robbie Deans to stay at his house in Auckland until prefab buildings are erected at the Deans and Hansen residence. At this stage Hansen has already moved in,but, Deans is yet to reply to the invitation.

Pakistan Cricket have announced a new shirt sponsor for their upcoming tour of New Zealand. Speaking at an official press conference last week the Pakistan Cricket chairman, Ivabin of Dosh, named the TAB as the new shirt sponsor. This comes after months of close contact between the two parties as thay have attempted to broker a deal to keep both the Pakistan Cricket Fund and the TAB afloat.

“Pakistan Cricket is over the moon with this new arrangement and we hope for many profitable years ahead. Most of our team is comfortable down at the local TAB so I see this as a real positive move for both the TAB and Pakistan Cricket.”

People close to both sides say that this new combination was a win-win for both parties. The Pakistan team can know work closely with long time rivals the  TAB to rig every cricket match they pay play in to maximise the revenue for both parties. Working together will enable them to rig the odds to astronomical proportions, while providing cricket with some of the strangest results every.

Critics have pointed this may lead to some strange cricket results in the coming months, especially in New Zealand. Some results likely to show that Pakistan and the TAB are working together

Today is the 2nd of September.  Whenever New Zealanders recall our nation’s great sporting deeds, the events of September 2, 1960, will always occupy a prominent place.

That was the day of the “Golden Hour” when Sir Peter Snell and Sir Murray Halberg indelibly inked the country’s name on the Rome Olympic Games canvas. so today sit back, relax and watch Snell at his best. Seemingly boxed in on the final corner he powers home to win his first gold medal. Incidentally, his world record time that he set in 1962 in Christchurch on a grass track in bare feet would have won him the gold medal in Beijing.

The World's most inconsistent player

Mark Greatbatch, the Black Caps coach, has come out in praise for his team following their inconsistent tour of Sri Lanka.

The team got off to a superb start scoring 280 in the first match and then lost the next two games being dismissed for 120 and 118. Greatbatch was encouraged by the consistent form the Black caps showed.

“When I took over the team I wanted to install the same consistency I had as a batsman. Finally, I think we are getting there and we are now one of the most consistently inconsistent teams around. Scoring 280 in the first game put as in a good position to be inconsistent. My only concern is that we followed up our dismal second game effort with another poor effort. True inconsistency requires us to go from troughs of form to peaks of performance within days. We are still working hard towards that goal.

Thankfully it seems that most of the players are starting to get the idea of Greatbatch’s philosophy. In particular the bowlers have been consistently inconsistent in almost every over they have bowled. It seems that most of them have spent the entire off season perfecting 7 different balls in one over, including the mandatory leg side wide. Disappointingly, Daniel Vittori will be back into the fold soon and he will no doubt disrupt Greatbatch’s plan with a collection of straight bowls outside off stump.

Thankfully the return of Vittori will be balanced by the 3 time winner of the Wisden Inconsistent player of the Year, Brendon McCullum.

Richie McCaw has defended his use of his team’s ‘Get out of Jail’ card to claim victory against South Africa in Soweto over the weekend. The card was used with perfect timing as the ALL BLACKS trailed by 8 points with 15 minutes to go. Looking down and out, captain fantastic issued the card to referee Owen and from there the game was ALL BLACK.

The South African Captain John Smit had only one answer to the McCaw move. Having just passed “Go’ and with a fresh $200 in his bank account Smit banked on rolling double 6′s and landing on the elusive ‘Drop Goal Drive’ in the final 40 seconds. Drop Goal Drive is an elusive property in the game of Rugby Monopoly. South Africans prize this property; the All Blacks shun it, while in the 1980’s the English team built their entire game plan on mortgaging this rather dowdy piece of land. But yesterday the dice failed to fall for the Springboks and instead of the double 6’s, pressure from McCaw, Kaino and Smith forced them to roll the dreaded ‘miss a turn’.

The ALL BLACK machine capitalised on this error with Ma’a Nonu spotting an area of the board South Africa had failed to build any hotels on. Like a human cannonball he was off. Catapulting into the free space and then with a flick off his wrists he rolled his dice and set Dagg off to claim Mayfair, Parkland, the Tri Nations with a perfectly 7 pointer in the corner. YOU LITTLE BEAUTY!!

Many TV pundits have questioned if McCaw should have used his card now or have saved it for next year’s World Cup. But McCaw quickly reminded those present at the after match press conference that New Zealand will be granted two of these cards next year as they are the home team at the World Cup. Like France in 2007 we hope they put them to good use.

In other news from the game, rumours that Dan Carter picked up the ‘Second Prize in a Beauty Contest’ card have been dismissed by both the referee and the ladies magazine, Teen 16. Rachel Retsoc, the Teen 16 Editor, was quick to squash rumours that Israel Dagg is the new pin up boy of the ALL BLACK Team. Talking after the game, Retsoc, as forthright as she is beautiful, was still crazy about Undie Man Dan. “Dan didn’t have his best game but when it mattered he showed he is still the rose in the ALL BLACK bouquet. Dan is still number one with our readers and if a beauty contest of the ALL BLACKS was held tomorrow, Dan is still the man” she blushed.

SA looked strong in places and some of their new boys stepped up. For me they just have a couple of old men holding them back. Get rid of them and they will only be stronger

Fitness really showed in this game. the last 10 were ALL BLACK with the Springboks forwards unable to cope with the speed. Some questions must be asked of the SA coaching. Taking off SMITH at no7 and leaving Smit and some of the olders guys on really showed in the last 20.

Conversly the ABs started making subs two minutes after half time the pce of the game was such.
